We Remember

The Living Memorial

A place of remembrance, tribute and reflection for those who served their communities and gave everything.

Introduction

About The Living Memorial

The Living Memorial, also known as Operation Sweetpea, is based in Rettendon, Essex. First established in 2009, it is a commemorative complex spanning a 20-acre site, which honours service personnel from military, emergency and civilian sectors.

The memorial was created to give the public a peaceful space for remembrance, tribute and reflection. It allows visitors the opportunity to reflect on those who gave their lives in service to the country through the various memorials, gardens and statues.

On this site, you will find The National Red Plaque Fire Service Memorial, which was inaugurated on 4 May 2024, also National Firefighters' Memorial Day. Ground was first broken in early 2024 by Gladiators star Michael "Saracen" Lewis and firefighter Lee Phillips. This was made possible by the fundraising efforts of the Red Knights England 4 Chapter; a grant from our main sponsors, the Fire Brigades Union, The Worshipful Company of Firefighters, and collaboration with Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Chelmsford and other dignitaries from the various groups that recognised and supported the site's creation.

The centrepiece of The National Red Plaque Fire Service Memorial is the wall itself, which bears the names of those fire-service personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty or through cancer, mental health issues or other causes directly related to their work across the UK.

The Living Memorial is also home to Echoes of History, a historical reenactment space that comes together several times a year. Living-history groups from Roman, Viking, Medieval, English Civil War, Napoleonic, First World War and Second World War eras set up authentic camps and put on displays, battle reenactments and educational talks.

The Living Memorial remains one of Essex's best-kept secrets and is best experienced in person. The Living Memorial looks forward to welcoming you.
